I don't get aggressive panhandlers like this. I guess it's a look I have on my face that says not to mess with me, because I have no problem slamming somebody in their face with my cellphone if they're getting to outta pocket, especially homeless dudes.

If somebody asks me for change, I don't ignore them, I politely shake my head no and keep it movin'.

My favorite response is: "Sorry, I just gave my last quarter to that guy over there." *point at nearby beggar*

I've actually witnessed street trash fighting over the prime begging spot in front of Mollie Stone's in the Castro. Apparently they work in shifts and one guy was overstaying his.

Something similar happened to me near Bushrod Park in the North Oakland area, back in the late 80s when I was doing work for Graduate school. He wasn't as large as the guy who attacked you but he was still large and ended up stealing my wallet and breaking a buddy of mines jaw.

Glad you came out somewhat ok.

Yeah the homeless in S.F may be a bit aggressive but I haven't been all out attacked by the homeless except in Oakland. Pretty scary night. Now that I think back on it, those guys may not have been homeless in the first place, but I don't like to assume.

I usually have the worst experience with SF homeless people. The east bay ones tend to either say:
1. god bless you
2. maybe next time
3. leave me alone

The SF ones, it runs the gamut from being cursed out, being hit on, to being blessed. It is totally like a box of chocolates.

Once when was leaving my job on Fillmore St, I watched this younger couple hand this panhandler/"homeless" guy a large bag of food from across the street at Burger King. He said to them "Man, I don't eat that shi*!" and handed it back to them.

No good deed goes unpunished!

In Berkeley I saw a "homeless" person looking for food for his dog. Organic and vegan only. Cash was accepted in lieu of food. :P

I've seen 4 homeless guys at the West Oakland BART station literally beating the crap out of this random guy who got off the train. One of them even pulled out a 12 inch butcher knife before BART police stopped it.

I've never seen the outright violence from other homeless that I've seen from Oakland homeless.

I just tell them that "change comes from within." Which is easy to do for me since I am 6'5" and 300 pounds.
