It sure pays good these days to be a city worker in SF.

"This year's cash-out prize went to outgoing police Capt. John Goldberg, who got $245,999 for his unused sick and vacation time, bringing his yearly pay to $350,403."[LEFT]

How many people in the private sector get to do that?

is 246k for one year of unused benefits? just showing up to work everyday was never so lucrative!

regardless, I'm shocked that there aren't caps--like 10k--on the amount of unused sick/vacation time pay that gov't workers can accumulate.

In my government job we have caps and cannot cash out at retirment. Sick time gets rolled over to help pay for medical coverage until you are old enough for medical/medicade.

Some government jobs have caps and cannot be cashed out at retirement. Sick time gets rolled over to help pay for medical coverage until you are old enough for Medicare.

As long as the cash out does not spike retirement I don’t have a problem with it. Either you get paid to be off or you get paid when you retire if you don’t take any time off.

It's not just a one time check. Likely this extra amount feeds into the formula that determines his retirement pension benefit. For example, let's say he retires at 75% of the past 3 years' average annual salary. 100k + 100k + 350k = 550k; 550k/3 = 183k; 75% * 183k = $137.5k.

Now he has an annual COLA'd pension of $137.5k per year for the rest of his life (an annuity value of around $3 million). Much more than he ever made on the job. This happens all the time. Every time the state tells you it needs to raise taxes "for education" or "for the children" it's really to cover this police Captain and other similar forms of corruption. Pay up, suckers.

In my gov't job, the cops get a different benefit package than the rest of us worker bees & usually it's a lot more generous. But again, we have caps. Can't have more than X amount of time in your sick or vacation fund; when you leave you can only take X amount with you; etc. Each contract is different....

Actually, every city worker is paid more than the Governor, because he refuses his salary and returns it to the state. So did Schwarzenegger.

I don't know where you heard that, $173k is the benchmark they're going on.

With a salary of $173,987, Brown makes about as much as a senior police sergeant in San Francisco, once premium pay for the cop's years of service, special training and the like are included.[LEFT]
