I'm not sure if it's true, but I keep reading things suggesting that the SFPD deliberately has lax enforcement in the area. Drug dealers come from not just other parts of SF but other parts of the Bay Area to sell drugs there. The idea is to 'contain' the criminals into the Tenderloin, so the people who have to suffer the crime (such as the epidemics of property crime for drug money) are the poor, law abiding families that live there. The reason for doing that is so the middle/upper class neighborhoods in the rest of the city don't have to deal with those problems as much (even though they're better equipped to handle it, considering their wealth and relative lack of child, disabled, and elderly residents).

It's such a small area, I can't imagine a city of the wealth of San Francisco wouldn't have the power to put enough cops on the streets there to stop the problem. It's just if they try, it goes into another neighborhood (game of wack-a-mole? )

I lived in the Tenderloin for six years, on O'Farrell between Market and Hyde which is worse than the area you mention. It was fine. I'd recommend it if you are used to and cool with a little crime and a few sketchy characters.

Yeah, I'm sure it was the cops fault your friends are in jail. You also probably typed this on a stolen computer. Either this post is a joke or you're a degenerate.

I lived in the Tenderloin area for a year and never had problems; as long as you keep walking and ignore panhandlers and comments. Bad things can happen anywhere. There are tourists out and about near Powel and Market at all hours, it seems. When I visited in 2001, I had no probems whatsoever. I'd agree that you have to watch out for slumlords and 'roach motel' type situations more than problems on the street.

Do NOT live in the Tenderloin! Maybe someone on this posting lived there and never had problems, but I do not believe it. Not at all. I saw so much violence and insanity there that I still to this day don't know how I escaped from there w/ my life. When crack came to the loin, it changed dramatically. You have to watch for gangs, crazies, seriously wacked out crackheads, anything and everything. I could tell you horror stories that you would think I was making up. I knew people that were robbed there (me) assaulted (me again) and killed (not me, but then I got out). It is WORSE than you can imagine, but some people see it as "colorful". These people are what are technically referred to as "idiots". There are other areas as bad or worse in SF. Going into the Mission District late at night alone is basically a suicide mission. Lower Height is another bad area, and even upper Haight is dicey. The dangerous thing about these bad areas is that everything can seem fine one minute and go scary in the wink of an eye. Oh, you may go to these areas many times and nothing will happen, then read in the paper the next day that someone was gunned down or knifed exactly where you were an hour later. It happened to me over and over. Sooner or later the odds catch up to you. I saw strong arm robberies, assaults, car break ins, and much more in broad daylight. All I can say is that if you have lived in the loin for 6 years and think the place is all right, then you have been there way too long and it is time to see how a nice safe town looks. Your judgment isn't sound. When ever I have gone back to SF to visit I am astounded by what I see in the loin. What I used to see as exciting and interesting I now see as dangerous and dumb. It's the same thing going down as when I lived there, but I have changed. I won't put up w/ it anymore.

the tenderlion is nasty to me. i dont live in frisco but i go there all the time. the only thing that i like about the tenderlion is that they sell clothes that i like but other than that there are hella dopefiends, ugly ass women sellin there bodys, probobly some vietnam vets that were messed up. i remember walking with my patna down the street in the tenderlion and we saw this dude taking a dump right in front of us. man i was nasty there is pee all over the ground. if you really wanna move to the tenderlion then go ahead but i would just because its nasty.

lotta people try to sell drugs to. u know its got its ups and downs. but i feel like theres nothing positive bkuz all they really sell on market is porn, there are strip clubs, liquor stores, and its all ugly to me i jus go there to get my stuff but i wouldnt live there.

its frisco, of all the areas in frisco, dont live there kuz its jus nasty.

go see it for yourself that what i would do.

at night time it might get a little dangerous. they shot dice, slang cane, dopefiends lite their pipes up, and ive seen fights.
