Why pick on Oakland? Berkeley, and according to some people here, San Fran, also need law enforcement overhauls.

I think that's an exaggeration. I read SF gate and I do see stories about Oakland but wouldn't say the news is centered around Oakland.

It's not, and never has been. That's something invented by Oakland boosters to prove their city really isn't full of crime, it's just a "media distortion".

Of course, when a magazine in Poland says "Oakland Hipster Bars rejuvenating city", then it's legit, and cannot be argued.

Honestly, in every big city, crime is prevalent.

That magazine in Poland would have also named specific neighborhoods and specific bars.

Not as prevalent as it is in Oakland.

Doc, what are you doing here?

I was expecting to have an answer to my questions about that lovely area in Oakland in the RE thread.

Crime is freaking prevalent and there are safe areas in Oakland. The motherlovin Oakland PD is under the jurisdiction of a fierce federal judge in control of the situation and they are close to being essentially federalized. You don't throw the good out with the bad and completely re-do the PD, you keep the good ones. There, handled that.

The issue isn't the amount of coverage about Oakland. It is about the type of coverage, or let's say coverage quality.

Let's say the Chron's editorial policy is to cover all murders, bank robberies and shootings that impact more than one person. It would be a reasonable expecation that all stories of that type would be covered.

What happens in the Chronicle, is that the stories of the type above are more likely to be front page news in the Chron when they happen in Oakland. And less likley to be front page news/breaking stories when they happen in SF. Or the incident will be buried in another story about something else and not a separate story.

If the coverage was "evenly applied' if you will, I'd have no issues. But as it stands now, the coverage of crime is not well balanced by the Chron. They will regulary cover stories of one type in Oakland, and skip the same type in SF. At the same time, other media outlets will cover the same story.

Considering that the Chron no longer produces much content, and is a news aggregator, they could easily broaden their coverage and be more exhaustive in their scope.

Conspiracy theories about the media are popular.

So crime is only widespread in Oakland?
