There is a commuter train that stops at Fairfield/Suisun City, and Davis, it goes to the East Bay and also to Sacramento:
Capitol Corridor Trains ::

People in the Sacramento forum might know more about that metro area, and Davis than people here though.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but what about Davis? Still a bit closer to the AFB, right before Sac for jobs for you, safe town.

You want easy access to Fairfield and Sacramento. I would also chime in on Vacaville. Solano Mall is in Fairfield and has a decent selection of stores plus a Trader Joes next door. Downtown Sacramento and Arden Fair Mall have shopping and Arden Fair is more upscale with a Nordstrom.Easily driveable on a weekend when you want more options than the Fairfield/Vacaville/Suisun City area has to offer.

The only way I would consider Vallejo/Benicia (15 miles south of Fairfield) is if you would be more interested in working in the Bay Area, ie Concord/Walnut Creek area, or Oakland/San Francisco. Benicia would be better than Vallejo but more expensive, but East Vallejo (areas east of I-80) are ok.

Vacaville would put you roughly 45 minutes from the Sacramento area. You also could consider Davis.
