What if you could pay someone $20K a year less not to? That's about what you'd need to pay more for me to leave my current work from home job. I'll coin a term here for it: "homeshoring". I'm surprised the brilliant Stanfurd person didn't think of that. Or maybe I'm not.

THIS. I cannot believe how many people have made an issue about her asking people to show up to work. She saw the data and saw they were not able to do their work from home so decided to put them in a place where employees are better able to be supervised since its become obvious they need it. Working from home is a perk and like any other perk it can be taken away.

People should be glad they are not fired for not doing their jobs because I know I would be canned if I did not do my job.

Working from home versus working from the office isn't the issue here. If it was that simple, she could have cracked down on the non-performers but instead she made a huge pronouncement and upended lots of people's lives.

VPN logs?? Seriously? As a full-time teleworker, I can tell you for certain that you can do a lot of "work" without being logged in via the VPN. But as an employee of another tech company, I'm just glad we'll be able to acquire any talent at Yahoo that's unhappy with their new policy.

Brilliant move Yahoo CEO! Way to understand the new generation of workforce! Hopefully next you'll have everyone filling out their TPS reports...

While the data she used to make her decision has not been made available (and never will) if over 50% of the employees were not logging on and doing their share of the work do you think her decision is justified? There have been many instances in which a group of people underperforming has ruined a good thing. I still have a hard time understanding at how making people show up to work is looked as an extreme abuse of power on her part considering the overwhelming majority of the people in the world have to show up to where their job is to perform the task they are paid to perform and no one is saying that all those companies are destroying their employees lives.

The boss announcing you have to go to work = upending people's lives?

Oh, the agony.

Oh, but all the "entitled" ones do and surely they must all be CEOs as well because they know best.

Of course, my guess is that many are work-at-home slackers scared to death this may start a trend and they'll be found out.

Are you willfully ignoring the crux of this whole discussion, or are you just not paying attention?

The boss reversing longstanding terms of employment (either formal or informal) that allow an employee to achieve their desired work/life balance is the problem. Fire the slackers, don't drag the good ones down.

the people who were performing aren't having there lives upended because of mayer but because of their colleages who were not working.
it's not unusual in orginizations to have all members of the team be held accountable for the actions a few.
