My son recently moved to San Francisco and works mostly doubles at an upscale restaurant. Failing to plan very well, he's run out of his inhaler and discovered he can't get Primatine mist to carry him over the weekend. He has a doctor appointment on Monday. And $22 to his name. His former doctor said he'd be happy to fax medical records and prescription information but neither the new doctor's office nor a pharmacy will do anything to help this kid get an inhaler. Any ideas? He's afraid of losing his job if he takes any time off for this.

Take him to the free clinic or the nearest emergency room. They will give him an inhaler free of charge, enough to make it through to his Monday appointment.

Tell your son to go to the San Francisco free clinic at 4900 California St (between 11th and 12th aves) 750-9894 for an appt. They only accept patients without insurance and will take good care of him!

I agree with the closest ER.

You don't go to an ER for an inhaler. That'll cost five hundred dollars as soon as you step foot in the door.

I am a nurse. If the kid has no money and needs the meds, the ER is the best place to get it. Coming from a long line of asthmatics that have had to be hospitalized, I know. There is such a thing as charity care.

That's sad, how old is he? Isn't there a federal law that provides kids with guaranteed healthcare that covers stuff like this? And why don't you give him the money, how much is one of these inhalers?

My inhaler cost me about $11.00 so I'm not sure why he would not have the money to get the inhaler when he has $22.00. Besides that, there are plenty of free clinics around that will help him out.

Sounds like he's going to have to come up with a much more sound life and business model or it's natural selection at work.

And for the longer term, he should sign up for Healthy SF.
