We will be relocating to the SF Bay area in the coming months and rather than purchase pre-owned, we would like to purchase a new build home. Unfortunately, we know nothing about the quality of the builders in your area.

Seems that the two major builders are Standard Pacific and Toll Brothers. What are their reputations? Is either considered a "cheap" home builder?

Are there other home builders we should look at?

Disclaimer: Yes, we like new home developments in the suburbs rather than urban settings.

Really? No opinions on the local home builders? What about Stonebrae neighborhood / country club near Danville? We will be relocating soon and looking for a nice place to build.

Our home was built by Shapell, and we are pretty happy with the quality, so far. Insulated well, quiet and of good construction.

You might find the Better Business Bureau website helpful...For Consumers - Golden Gate BBB

I think you can look up the builders that you're interested in to get some sense of their reputations?

We had a home built by Standard Pacific back in 2002, but in Orange County. We had a very positive experience with them. No problems at all, quality was great, no issues once we moved in, customer service was always prompt and friendly.... We lived in the house for close to 3 years. Are there structural problems now? I'll never know. But we saw no signs of issues while living in our home. I would go through the new home process again in a heartbeat not only b/c SP made it easy and painless, but also b/c I am tired of living in a 50 year old rancher (but that's a story for another day).

@ hubbard53...My parents bought a Standard Pacific Home in the Central Valley of CA., and have had nothing but problems with it. Toll Brothers are solid, so are Shappell's, & SHEA Homes. Stay away from "KB Homes" tho, they are also issue prone.

Thanks for the info. Seems that Toll Brothers seems the way to go ... not a huge selection though as most of their neighborhood developments are sold out. We'll keep looking!

Thanks
