We're a gay couple in their early fifties, one of us is being relocated to Oakland, we would like to get some adivse about nice and "safe" areas to live, up to 30 minutes drive to Oakland is ok, close to some shops and restaurants would be nice.
Thanks in advance for your advice
Dalton

I recommend that you look into any area that is around Lake Merritt to start your search.

I would recommend the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. Shops, restaurants, nice Downtown area and a BART station off College Avenue.

What sort of neighborhood do you want to live in? Urban? Suburban? Walkable? Big lots? Lots of greenery?

I think Rockridge is definitely a good choice as mentioned earlier.

I would avoid West Oakland, ALL of East Oakland, and some areas around Lake Merritt. mod cut

I'd personally also avoid West Oakland, but this poster just painted all of East Oakland (a significantly large geographical area with some really gorgeous areas) with the same brush. Bad idea. There are quite a few very livable areas in "East Oakland" dependent on where it is. In addition, few would complain about Lake Merritt - so if you have an area you might want to be more cautious with, it's only be the southeast edge, and it really depends. Most of the lake area is gorgeous. Aim to be near Grand Lake for the most entertainment/liveliness.

You could include Berkeley, then. Lots of areas to choose from there; Elmwood (bordering on Rockridge), Claremont, north Berkeley, for starters.

Rockridge, if you can afford it.

Also consider Cleveland Heights, Glenview, Dimond & Upper Dimond, Laurel and Redwood Heights, they are all very nice areas but way more affordable than Rockridge, and very gay friendly. You couldnt have picked a better place.
