Castro valley is a pretty good pick. If someone can point you to some pockets of Oakland it might be nice to be close to Sf and other parts of Oakland. otherwise Castro valley is not so far out.

I'm not familiar with some of those, but if I were you I would concentrate on Crockett and Benicia, mainly the former. Crockett is a really lovely small town with kind of a beachy vibe, it's cold and foggy but VERY safe. It's also very quiet and though there are not a lot of amenities in the town, Pinole (also safe) has everything you could possibly ever need and is a short drive away. I looked at an apartment in Crockett I loved but it was just too far from my work and too quiet for me, but it could really work for you. Benicia is also really nice, but I'm concerned they may be advertising a Vallejo studio as Benicia to get more of a draw. Trust me when I say you do not want to be in the areas of Vallejo your price point affords. Ditto with West Oakland.
