I don't know who wrote the title, the copy editor or Cain himself. From my quick reading of Cain I'd think Cain himself did, not being afraid to wear the label.

I'm not sure the term had been invented yet, back in his day.

That's straight from the Chronicle archive. I doubt they retitled his columns.

That doesn't look like the title to his column. It says "updated 2012". I think they did title it. I don't see anything in the column that has anything to do with bleeding-heart liberalism. I don't recall that Caen's columns had titles.

Blame the chronicle then. I don't know, it's their archive.
Actually here's an old microfiche, it had a title.
Rose Bowl, True Crime and Herb Caen (S.F. Chronicle-1/3/39)

lol! That's what I was doing. But it raises the question (bring me up to date, please): is the Chron a conservative paper, or liberal, or middle-of-the-road?

I think the editorials lean a bit left, but they have moderate and conservative columnists as well. It's a good paper to me.

I always thought it was pretty good. But I've noticed that on some forums here, the NY Times is considered liberal, almost left-wing! Who knew? And it seemed odd that the Chron would call Caen a bleeding-heart liberal, but maybe it was a joke? Oh well. Whatever.

NY Times is highly liberal. It's still a quality newspaper, but it's definitely liberal.

Imho, Herb Caen served as the social conscious of San Francisco, a lot of what is occurring in SF now might not have happened if he were still alive. Even though Herb was not born & raised in SF, he was fiercely for & all about SF. When Herb died, a bit of San Francisco died too.

Herb Caen was my Dad's favorite columnist at the Chronicle, as for me, I loved reading his columns about Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City."
