We're flying from New York to San Francisco and will be there Memorial Day weekend when my sister in Santa Barbara has time off to visit. But she doesn't want to drive in dangerous - crowded and possibly drunken - traffic that weekend. When are the safest times and what would be the safest route for her to drive to San Francisco and back? Thanks!

I wouldn't be worried about drunk traffic as most people in SF go out on foot, taxi or public transportation. If you want to be very cautious don't drive after 2:00 pm lol. Take 280 in/out of the city.

Lots of people in SF leave town for long weekends, but a lot of suburbanites drive into SF on those holidays to get drunk and have picnics, so there's always more traffic all weekend long and the drivers act like jerks. You know they're suburbanites because they honk and yell at you if you dare to cross the street at a stop sign when they just want to blow through it.

Not to mention them driving 5 mph and not moving when they are supposed to.
