If OP is capable of find a job in San Francisco, he would not have posted this thread.
Again, there are plenty of young adults in high tech industry who live AND work in San Francisco.
In addition, there are plenty of young adults who work in one of those companies in south bay that provide employees with free commute transportation (shuttle buses). Why can't OP find a job in one of those companies if he is capable of doing so?

The south bay can't even compare in terms of social life. I've lived in San Jose and Santa Clara and used to go out in down Mountain View & Palo Alto. The nightlife and social offerings of the city are 100 times better for young single folks.

The city life does have many inconveniences: Lack of parking, outrageous prices, noise, and of course that hour commute. Are you able to count your bus hours as hours worked? I can so the commute is not a negative aspect for me at all. If anything, I like my alone time on the shuttle.
But you are still not capable of finding a job in the city where you truly want to be in.
In addition, many people have telecommute jobs these days, why are you not capable of getting one?

Oh, when I said "I did find a job in one of those companies", that was a typo. I meant "HE did find a job in one of those companies". That sounded really rude, sorry.

I am curious where you decided to live? I am in a similar boat -- currently in Portland and will be working for a company in Mountain View. Not crazy about the SF commute at all, so if there is a livable city with decent nightlife nearby, I would prefer that. Mountain View, San Jose, Cupertino would all be possibilities. I don't know much about the area though, other than what I've read (and people say different things). Now that your 6 months in, would you mind sharing your thoughts?? Thanks!

Mountain View would put you near the nexus of Santa Cruz, San Jose, and San Francisco (Oakland, too), whereby all these would be accessible. Nightlife on Castro St., Murphy Ave., and Palo Alto would right around the homefront.
