Someone just posted one of these a couple of weeks ago. This map doesn't represent reality very well. It shows an area of north Berkeley/Kensington, in the hills, as being one of the lowest-rent areas in the entire Bay Area, but it's actually the highest rents in the East Bay I've ever seen.

So, looks like the Treasure Island Development is going forward ... since closing the Navy base and up till now, it has been a creepy dump ... this should be interesting ... they will offer lots of park space with high-density housing -- 25% of which will be subsidized housing at lower than market rates. Particularly interesting will be how the traffic flows on and off the bridge and Yerba Buena Island. PITA!

There was someone posting here awhile ago who lives on Treasure Island. He said it's the only place he could find affordable rent, but in order to get BART or a bus to the East Bay, he had to go into San Francisco first, which was a pain.

That map should be pretty depressing for anyone looking to rent in the Bay Area. Basically you have to rent in the slums of West Oakland, Vallejo, Richmond, or the boonies of Antioch, or Hollister. If you're really hard up, you can move to San Joaquin County. Otherwise you're paying nearly $2 a square foot just for a roof over your head. Great job Bay Area!!!

Thanks for the perspective from distant suburban Generica Orange County. Mine is actually more like $3.00/sq. ft. How much is it per square foot to sit motionless on the 405 for hours?

Well, it is showing pricing per square foot. I would imagine the only rentals in that area would be inlaw units, too. That really isn't a big area for multi family developments. So yeah, a couple of people rent out their inlaw units for $700-$800/month to their nieces from Omaha and it skews the numbers.

The Bay Area rents seem so expensive because they are expensive. You think paying $3 a sqft is not expensive? On a 1,000 sqft place, that's $3000 per month! LOL

So basically on a $80,000 salary, you're paying over half your take home pay to live in some small box in the city. Wow, cool dude!
