There was a program on the History Channel? I believe the night before last talking about how New York was overdue for a big quake and because of the geology (not a lot of faults to absorb the energy) a 5.x or 6.x would be devastating. In a weird way it's kind of comforting that we can be 50 miles away from a quake and almost enjoy a similar sized quake.

...that is interesting!
Down here, we feel them, and wonder, "is it going to get bigger or stop..?"
foreshock or aftershock...

We felt the 1989 one clear down here in SoCal. It was in the late afternoon and everyone was sitting at their desks at work and it just felt like a long low rumble. Everyone got really quiet because we knew there was a big one someplace... but not close. A few minutes later someone turned on the TV set in the conference room and we saw San Francisco.

I was in the Bay Area (Belmont) when that hit, just three days before my 13th birthday... we had to cancel my birthday party & re-locate my Bat-Mitzvah, which was scheduled for early December at a hotel that collapsed. That's a day I certainly won't ever forget!!
