I'm moving from SoCal to NorCal to finish out my senior year at SFSU. I've been looking for places like crazy, but I have been unable to find a city in my price range. I spoke to my family whom lives in Sacramento, and they recommended Vallejo. They said its a nice little area with cheaper rent and I found some really nice apartments in my price range. Also BART goes there so I don't have to worry about crossing the bridges to get to school. Even though my family recommended this city, EVERY thing I read about this city is bad. High crime and bad city, etc. is this true? Is Vallejo a bad city? Are there a lot of things to do? Also most importantly, I know it's by the bay, so there's tree's and nice places to hike..right? I'm from the desert so this means a lot to me.

It's not possible to commute to SFSU from Vallejo with public transportation.

Well, technically it is possible, but it will easily take 5 - 6 hours round trip and it will cost you a lot because you'll have to make multiple transfers each way.

BART also doesn't go to Vallejo.

The last stop that direction is Richmond.

Why not live in Park Merced, with room mates your rent will only be around $500.

It's not nice, but it's virtually 100% SFSU students.

Who told you BART goes to Vallejo? You'd have to cross 2 bridges to get from there to SF.
BMW has the right idea ^^^; get into a group living situation in SF while you're in school. When you graduate and get a job, you can look around for something in your price range, whatever that ends up being.

My Grandma said it did, she did say she was unsure (cut her a break, she's old!) but thanks a lot ^^^^ this whole time I thought it went to Vallejo. I've lived with room mates for my last 3 years of college and my boyfriend and I want to move away from that and live together. So since BART, goes to Richmond...how's it like to live in Richmond?

Not nice. You'd be better off in Oakland. It's only a 30 minute BART ride and there's a shuttle from Daly City to campus. I did it sometimes as an undergrad, but honestly driving is even faster.

Compton is way safer than Richmond. Would you want to move to Compton?

I agree with the above. Oakland would be your best bet to save on rent, but still not live in a crap hole like Richmond, since you don't want to share an apartment at SFSU. You can take BART to Daly City and use the SFSU shuttle.

There are nice parts of Richmond, but they won't be cheap and they won't be student friendly. Besides, it's really far out.

Your best bet would be to get a roomshare near SFSU's campus, or if you want your own room check out Oakland. How much can you afford for rent/utilities/BART per month?

It goes to Concord, across the Sac'to River from Vallejo and Benicia. Benicia, btw, is much more pleasant and a little cooler (temp) than Vallejo. But people drive across the bridge to catch BART in Concord.

Concord is still a really long BART ride away. At least an hour away, plus worse when trains are only running every 20 mins...
