Thanks so much to everyone for taking the time to respond. We do not know many ppl out here, so your replies are extremely appreciated. I will def start keeping an eye out for the locations you suggested and will check out the SF Tenants link.

Videotaping would be almost impossible as their front door is maybe a foot from ours. We are on a month to month lease, so with 30 days notice we can be out of here. Unfortunately, having just moved all our earthly possessions cross-country in Jan, one of the last things we want to do right now is move again with the work and cost involved.

My husband is also of the opinion that we might move somewhere and have similar or even worse neighbors, so why risk it. But as for me, I've never lived next to anyone even remotely as nightmarish as these two ('You *****, you suck men's **** for crank!' shouted out on the porch at 3am, the ugly racist slurs shouted, etc). My husband has wanted to go over many times to tell them to quiet down, but I physically stand in his way as there is no telling what these ppl might do.

My mom called from out of state yesterday and she could hear them wailing and shouting in the background thru the wall. She initially thought it was the tv here and it was a horror film on for Halloween.

Default PS Small world, gizmo 980!

Wonder if it is the same complex... We're in La Esplanade Apts. Did you move out b/c of the apt/location or....? Would love to live in SF itself but the parking situation seems a nightmare.

It being 5 mins from husband's work (Daly City), it seemed ok, esp as we knew nothing about the areas or neighborhoods of the Bay Area.

Well, about a month after we moved in, the neighbors from hell moved in right next to us. The police have been out here 3 times in the last 7 months b/c of their insane crack addict fighting. As the walls here are paper thin, we hear it if someone coughs in the flat next to us. He is constantly throwing her out in the middle of the night, both of them shouting and screaming the worst obscenities. And then her pounding on the door to be let in again. At 1am or 3am or 4am. Not even mentioning all the times during the day. They have no respect or consideration for any other ppl that happen to live near them. Two other ppl who have asked them to keep it down have been shouted down in a rage.

I have told the landlord about this twice, my husband once. And he has warned them - they were quiet for awhile (about 2-3 weeks) but have started up again. This w/e and now again last night at 3:30am. And it's continued all day.

We're paying $1495 a month for a crappy apt with paper thin walls (the ocean view was it's one redeeming feature) in the Manor District on Esplanade. Can anyone recommend another area for us, sth quiet and not too pricey without the crack addict fighting? The environment is seriously starting to affect me.
Castro Valley is pretty nice. Barely any crime what so ever and no so pricey anymore. Bart takes you right to SF.

Oh wow! I don't mean to laugh but this sounds very, very bad and it's not the norm. I hope that you find a better place to live. You are bound to find something better and if I were in your shoes I'd be looking yesterday. When you're renting it's really not worth it to stay somewhere when you're miserable in my opinion. You might as well be happy handing over all of that money every month. Truly, I wish you the best and some peace.

I don't think that was the name - pretty sure it was something like "Ocean View," and my unit was at 350 Esplanade (right at the corner of Manor, near the McDonald's). I moved simply because it was overpriced @ $1250 for a crappy 1-bedroom, and at the time I was working in Belmont... found a nicer and cheaper place in Belmont, so it was just time to move. But overall I was pretty happy there, and REALLY loved the town of Pacifica. So I hope you just found the one bad place, and will be happier somewhere else nearby... don't give up on the town yet!

I now live in San Francisco itself, and parking isn't an issue since we have a garage & driveway. Getting that lucky is rare, but certainly not impossible. Even if the place doesn't offer parking, you can usually find a lot nearby with monthly rates - expect to pay $200+ for that, though. Or you can just ditch the car (or park it somewhere permanently) and try to utilize our public transit system... can be a pain in the arse sometimes, but it gets you where you need to go. And if you lived walking distance from a BART or Muni Express stop, you'd be in business. Good luck!

I agree, and that's the beauty of renting! I moved from my place in Belmont simply because they started a 2-year construction project (a new library, which is ironic since I'm a librarian )... I'm a late sleeper and didn't appreciate being woken up by hammers & cranes, LOL. That's one reason I'm still a renter, since I like having the flexibility of moving when I choose - sometimes requires breaking a lease, but even that's easier than selling a home.

Thanks, everybody, for the tips. We would have already moved prob had it not been for the huge relocation we just did in Jan. Plus, the ocean view is nice, coming from Chicago and the fact that we know absolutely nothing about the areas/towns/neighborhoods in the Bay Area (another reason we didn't venture to move yet to SF aside from the parking and high rents - we know very little about the neighborhoods). Cluless party of one right here: I just learned today that Richmond is a bullet-proof vest zone, for example.

Husband's company has locations in Daly City and Walnut Creek and he could have chosen to work at either. Walnut Creek seemed so far and from what i read fairly suburban, not to mention the heat in the summer. I thought the proximity to SF would be much better (we prefer cool, fog & the water nearby), but what do I know? A lot of his colleagues prefer working at the WC location for some reason.

Just in case you're confused (as many people get), that's the TOWN of Richmond - not the Richmond district of SF, which is rather nice and safe.

I personally would agree with your assessment of WC, that it's too suburban, too hot, and far from San Francisco... but it is cheaper than the Peninsula, so that's always something to consider.

Although I fought moving to Walnut Creek because I hated hot weather, I am glad we made the move. (If I want cool weather during a hot spell, I hop on BART and go to the city.) We barely used our air conditioner this past summer, maybe twice, although the previous summer was a killer. Walnut Creek is a great place to live with beautiful parks, good schools, upscale shopping and dining, and open space for hiking. Albany is another wonderful place to live...the weather is very moderate year round. When we moved to Walnut Creek from Albany we had to buy shorts...the weather in Albany was seldom warm enough for typical summer clothing.
