Patterson is kind of far out, but people do commute from Modesto and Stockton to the Bay Area, so we begrudgingly accept the Altamont Pass crowd in this forum.

Do you have any impressions about these locations as places to live? I'm looking at job options out there but there seems to be a lack of excitement/culture

SJ County is apart of the SF Bay Area now. We need to be more inviting to Modesto and Salinas too. Same area, TBH that's why their populations surged because the cost of living is a fraction of the bay. I think in the long run this is good for us, will give us more territory for an expanding middle class to call home but at the same time am hopeful roads and transit keep up in expansion with the commuting.
