Livermore to Modesto is too far. Signing up for a 100 mile per day commute in California traffic is not a way to improve one's life.

You said you have lived just outside of St. Louis our entire lives. Depending on the pace of life and how congested living where you are right now might affect how you feel about California. I lived most of my life in California and recently moved to Michigan. There are a LOT more people in California than other places. There is a lot of gang activity. California has become kind of trashy. Unless you are wealthy and can get "beyond" it all be prepared for congestion. People generally respect property better in the Midwest. When you are in California, using public restrooms for example, there is often gang writing on the walls, mirrors are broken or scrawled on (or not there) and the equipment damaged. You do not see that in the Midwest very much. There is a lot of trash and litter around. Traffic can be very heavy and slow. The freeways were relatively empty when I was growing up. Now they are constantly clogged. Air pollution is heavy is parts of California - mostly central valley and southern. The quiet city I grew up in now has murders all the time. I hate to be so dismal but California has changed a lot. It is very liberal and everybody does there own thing. Property taxes are 1% of the market value of the property, essentially. You buy a house for $200,000 and you will pay about $2,000 in property taxes. Sales tax is around 8% (depending on locale) Vehicle registration is not cheap. Buying a home varies depending on region but can be very high in certain areas. Use the Internet to research the cost of homes in the area you are interested in. Once again, the more money you have the better off you are in California. I would be careful, especially for the sake of your children and consider everything before moving to California. If I can answer any more questions I would be glad to help.

Curious whether you made the move to CA. I'm looking at upper-middle class areas to live if working in Modesto as well.
