My old wooden backyard fence is rotting away, I need to install a replacement asap. I live in a high crime area, so the new fence needs to be strong and secure. My budget is tight, so I can't afford a cement wall or etc.

I've gotten a few bids for standard cedar fencing, but the fence guys are telling me that this kind of fence will only last 20 years or so.

The last fence builder suggested building a "slatted chain link fence" using a product he called "Viewguard", which comes with vinyl security slats in the fence. This fence would be cheaper than wood, and the fence guy said it could last 60 years! The slatted chain link fence seems like a good idea, but I'm hesitant because I couldn't find info about it online. I googled it and couldn't find many reviews or info on "Viewguard."

Has anyone installed a slatted chain link fence at your home? How did it work out?

Any other suggestions for low-cost, secure, and durable fencing? I'm open to suggestions and advice!

Thanks!

I've seen slatted chain link around. It starts to look cheap and run-down when the slats deteriorate or break. But I assume they can be replaced. Chain link definitely is stronger.

Slatted chain link for security, but they will weather. And the slats occasionally need to be replaced.
