Hi everyone,

I've been lurking on this forum for quite a while hoping to find some good advice so I figure it would be best to become an active user. I have been tearing my hair out trying to figure out all of this relocation/commuting stuff myself so any help would be appreciated!

My fiance and I will be relocating to the bay for our careers. He will be working in Danville and I will be working in San Francisco. I've been trying desperately to find a place within walking distance to BART because I will not have a vehicle to drive. I have looked at all cities but primarily focused on Walnut Creek, Pittsburg (Over $10 BART commute a day...eesh), Concord, and Dublin/Pleasanton. I've researched the different crime statistics as well. While we are looking to be frugal in our living situation, we don't want to sacrifice safety for cheap rent. Being from the Central Valley, I don't know the reputation of individual cities in the bay area.

In your opinion, what city would you call the "best value?" For example, while Walnut Creek is more expensive than say Concord, do you think it is worth the extra cost?

Concord is cheaper than Walnut Creek because it has a crappier school district and more crime. There are some nice parts of Concord but I dunno how close they are to BART. Walnut Creek, Dublin and Pleasanton are fine if all you care about is safe, they are all very suburban.

Suburban areas are not good for getting to BART without a car, most people park and ride or get dropped off by their spouse because they live far from a BART station. Maybe you could find an apartment in downtown Walnut Creek though, or near the Pleasant Hill BART station.

I'd go with Walnut Creek

There are quite a few apartments and condos near Dublin BART as well. Dublin is a pretty good value. The only drawback is that they don't have a charming downtown area. Lots of strip malls. Dublin probably has a bit more diversity than WC or Pleasanton. Walnut Creek has more shopping options. To be honest, PH, WC, Dublin, Pleasanton and the towns on that corridor feel very much the same in general. (I haven't spent much time in Concord).
