It didn't last generations. Loma Prieta almost leveled the bridge, and it's epicenter was quite a distance away (and wasn't even 7.0 Richter scale).

OK, so it's the need for an earthquake-safe bridge that's making it more difficult this time?

The new span is designed to withstand multiple Richter 8.5 scale earthquakes, along with once in a century 9.0 events. It's also built with composite materials sourced from outside of the USA. The bridge is supposed to last over 150 years with proper maintenance. Of course it's going to be expensive.

A couple things ran up its bill in construction; subcontractors who did shoddy work, Chinese made bolts and screws, along with Oakland and San Francisco bickering on its final design. It's also the widest bridge in the world and have record amount of traffic on it every day.

Personally speaking, I'm glad it's finally built. It looks great and Oakland finally has a centerpiece to show as a symbol of their city.

Yes it does look great but that's not the issue. There are cracked welds throughout and the cables holding the bridge together on the inside are badly rusted. These are legitimate structural issues, not just little slip ups.

Not to mention almost every single whistle blower that drew attention to this issue was fired and/or relocated.

More rods, more water contamination.
Corrosion feared as water leaks into Bay Bridge

Maybe I am not going to take the bridge anymore?

At least they're making sure the birds are protected while they take their time dismantling the old one

Spending soars higher on relocation of Bay Bridge
