Parts of Berkeley are quite charming, actually.

LOL true that! Techies have caused the rents to go up above more than normal due to demand.

Palo Alto is high because there is too much money in one little area. The more money there is, the less it is worth. Palo Alto is suffering from a localized hyperinflation.

A home like this one in my current area would be worth about $140,000.

950 Matadero Av, Palo Alto, CA, 94306 Single Family Home for Sale by R. Brendan Leary

In my old home state of Maryland, it would go for about $350,000 due to the size of the lot.

The thing with real estate is the price will rise as long as there is money to buy it. That home is worth no more in Palo Alto than it is anywhere else. The value of the dollar has fallen in Palo Alto because there are too many of them.

Palo Alto has more than 3 jibs for every residence driving up home prices.
