Makes me feel OLD!

Sutro Tower | Bay Area's Essential Connection

I was pretty young when it opened so I was not all that tapped into the controversy that led up to its construction.

Even now various crack pot groups try to claim it will fall over in an earthquake, hammering UCSF or the residential areas around there. Good luck trying to get it removed. There is no better place from which to broadcast / receive signals that span such a large portion of the Bay Area, it's line of sight to an amazing percentage.

Thanks for posting this - we're new to the area and wondered about the history of that thing (and exactly just what it was), and hadn't gotten around to googling 'giant tower thing in SF', LOL.

Happy birthday indeed. I think this sums it up perfectly.

Quote:
Poll a group of San Franciscans, and the like/dislike for Sutro splits at about age 45. If you were reading newspapers when it went up, you're anti-Sutro. If you grew up in its shadow, you may be considering Sutro body art.

I like the tower because I can figure out how bad the fog is from a long distance based on how visible the tower is

I lived on Potrero Hill when they put that thing up and it ruined our view for the rest of the time we lived there. I really thought someone would have bombed the thing by now.
