Really? 9k is your budget for a rental? Um, okay. Live wherever the heck you want. Sure, Sausalito...Tiburon...Belvedere, anywhere in Marin would probably do you.

If your office is moving to Fisherman's Wharf, then stick to Marin Co. If your office is in SOMA stick closer to the BART line or Piedmont or the Berkeley Hills.

It's not that I want to pay that much - it's the most I can afford, and actually, it will not get me the quality of living my family has now (for much less than half of that money) anywhere near the office . That's why I'm looking elsewhere. I'm already subjecting my family to a difficult relocation, so I'm trying to do everything possible to make it less uncomfortable. Also, keep in mind that I'm looking for a place for 4 adults and a child - it's not like I can put them in a one-bedroom, which would be an option if I lived alone.

But thanks for suggestions. I am more interested in understanding quality of life and commute in those areas. I'll definitely take a closer look at Peidmont and Potrero Hill.

OP, Jade has found some really nice listings in excellent neighborhoods that will give you what you're looking for for 1/2 the $9K you've budgeted for. Those neighborhoods are across the Bay, but the commute is easy.

I would definitely avoid Piedmont. It is right on top of the Hayward fault which is considered the most dangerous fault in the bay area. Also if you do not like urban living, you may not like being packed into an underwater/underground human sardine can - Bart at rush hour.

Potrero Hill is ok for a short commute for downtown but that is about it. It does have a Whole Foods and the best gym in SF but feels quite urban the way it positioned between the 101 and 280 freeways.

This condo in the Forest Knolls neighborhood(west of Twin Peaks) is in a family friendly SF neighborhood.
It is one of the least urban neighborhoods in the city with a lot of trees and access to the Mt. Sutro trails. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the Forest Hills station.

Spacious 4 BR/3.5 BA Executive Home, Close to UCSF

This home is in a fabulous location and combines the best of a walkable neighborhood, access to transportation and proximity to the Presidio.

Inner Richmond Big House for Rent!!

You're assuming he'd be commuting during rush hour. If it's his office, he can set his own commute hours. He already indicated he has long work hours, anyway. And avoiding earthquake faults is almost impossible in the Bay Area. However, that house in the Richmond district does look great! Great location, too--away from the traffic noise, right by the Presidio golf course!

FYI OP you can take the Transbay bus from Oakland. Typically not crowded and speedy. I take the P bus (that goes through Piedmont) and it takes 15-20 min on the bus both directions.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

A high budget, high quality of life elsewhere (depending on how you define it ) may be hard to replicate in the Bay Area. Come visit, with your family, for a week before committing.

a nice size house ,reasonable commute and quality of life are all subjective.my thought

if your workday starts at an off peak time (5-6 am for securities trader for example ) and you like suburbs i would consider lamorinda
like this place $10,000 for 3600 square feet,4 bedrooms pool decent off peak commute
Beautiful home in Lafayette for rent

otherwise st frances woods or forest hills
Beautiful Luxury Home w/ Stunning Views
$7000 5 bedrooms nice area more urban area but much easier commute
