Because it isn't needed in a visual approach and would be used in conditions like these anyway.

It isn't needed but maybe the pilots were expecting it or were not aware that it wasn't working? Latest news says that the pilots were using automatic landing and this is helped by the ILS system. I am looking for more technical info on this.

No, they would have been aware it wasn't working. They also wouldn't have been using it with 10 miles visibility.

Wow!

Autothrottle problems suspected in Heathrow 777 crash ? The Register

I had sort of glanced over this incident back when it happened.

Now, in retrospect ... it certainly can be ruled neither in nor out.

At this point it appears they were in manual glide path control mode and the issues with SFO automated nav systems are probably non applicable here. Focus is on the autothrottle, Heathrow deja vu.

The Heathrow incident was ultimately blamed on fuel icing with the Rolls Royce Engines as I recall. The Asiana 777 was equipped with GE's.

CNN has a nice video in a 777 simulator duplicating the incident.
