I just graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in Ohio and I am considering relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area. What cities or areas would be good places to look for jobs? I'd really like to find an area that is scenic and runner-friendly on top of that. I don't know a whole lot about the area, but I'm flying out there briefly in September. Thanks for the help!

There are walking/running/bike trails in a lot of places: Fremont, Walnut Creek, Berkeley, and probably a lot of other places. Mechanical engineering jobs? Have you done any online research? Did you go to job fairs and job seminars at your engineering school to meet with employers from the Bay Area? Check with your university's employment center for graduating students? Your university and your engineering department should have lots of contacts and resources, and they're free. Use them.

Admittedly I haven't done much research on my own yet, but I won't really be in a position to move until next summer. I got a local engineering job here in Ohio during the school year and now I'm regretting not being brave enough to look elsewhere (I doubt my tiny university has a lot of west coast contacts, anyway). I'm basically just wondering if there are places near San Francisco (anywhere within about an hour drive maybe?) that have a high concentration of engineering jobs in general, sort of like Silicon Valley is a haven for IT and EE people. If not, or if this is a silly question, I apologize. I'm just looking for a little direction before I dive into a super broad "San Francisco mechanical engineering jobs" search.

Contact your engineering faculty from your school. See what connections they may have in CA.

Probably every city in the bay is runner friendly. Find a job first. Worry about the running later. For example I live in Oakland. In the middle of the city is a lake with a 5k path around it. It is 1 mile from my place. There are other running trails and parks within 2 miles. Plus picturesque quiet hilly residential streets within a quarter mile.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.
