Saw this in the Chron today:

To supplement the police, some areas are hiring private security. Pretty inexpensively, $20 a month. Maybe we need more public/private partnerships to alleviate the resource stepped OPD.

On an autocorrecting iDevice.

No prob with this. I live in an urban neighborhood adjacent to the CBD here in Houston, and we pay a small district management tax that pays for constable patrols. They're very visible.

Just the visibility may help some, but they are generally minimum wage or just above and unarmed. Those in the article did appear to be carrying. A lot cheaper than the amount people's taxes would go up to pay for more police.

Eyes on the street is probably good enough to deter most property crime.

How can this be? I thought it was "PC" to say that there is no issue with crime in Oakland.

I dont get why people feel the need to make A-hole comments?

In fact, it's NOT correct, political or otherwise, to say to throw blanket generalizations over an entire city, and you deserve to be SHARPLY called out as you should know better.

And people who live in condo fortresses in the middle of a ghetto themselves should really be quiet.

I don't recall anyone on this board ever saying Oakland doesn't have a problem with crime. All anyone has ever said is that crime tends to be concentrated in more areas than others, and that for a lot of us, we don't live in fear of it since we don't have to deal with it on a daily basis. Pretty big difference, but hey if it makes you feel better to make up lies on a message board, go nuts.

Exactly. It's acceptable to discuss public safety and crime in a specific, logical and rational manner, but unfortunately this forum has attracted way too much attention (trolling) with spamming about crime. Hence it gets heavily moderated accordingly.
