Coming from the northeast this December for one night of Furthur (NYE), then wana explore the coast and area for a few days.... I have never been west of Las vegas. Google tells me the Redwood national park is 5 hours away, one way. I'm wondering if there are individual or smaller groups of giant redwoods further south?

Wife and I enjoy the outdoors, any other park or waterfalls recommendations within a few hour drive of bay area would be awesome. Was thinking of driving out to Yosemite, but not sure.

There are a few little waterfalls in Golden Gate Park. Not much in the way of natural waterfalls around here. The nearest really impressive ones are in Yosemite National Park, which may or may not be accessible in December.

Giant Sequoias don't live in the Coastal Redwood territory.

The closest Giants are at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from the Bay Area. The Stanislaus River runs through the park as well.

That may be the option to take, because it takes about 1 more hour on top of that, to get into the best of the Coast Redwoods.

Although, the snow around Calaveras in December could equalize the effort.

Otherwise, Myers Flat / Avenue of the Giants shy of 4 hours north is where the best of the best begins for Coast Redwood forest.

Who cares about water falls when you've got tree nymphs.
