Hi all,
Excited to go to Reno in mid-November for a weekend getaway. I will be leaving from Davis at around 3:30 PM on Friday afternoon.
How bad will traffic be, I know it is pre ski season but is there a lot of commute traffic going along 80 East from Davis to the 65 interchange usually?
Also, I'm assuming heavy snow and chain control would be rare that early in snow season, is that accurate? Could be rain I know but no one can predict that.

Anyways, Davis to Reno is 145 miles and supposed to be 2 hrs 15 mins. I'm guessing 3 hours tops at above time...or is that too optimistic?

PS I already tried posting this in Sacramento forum and got no response.

I lived in Reno for 9 years and have a son at UC Davis. I made this trip often. 2.25 to 2.5 hrs with no traffic. Have seen it with snow on the mountain go upwards of 6+ hrs. Check with Caltrans for road conditions. Snow is more likely in Jan/Feb but you never know what kind of year it will be. You will likely hit Sacramento traffic but it isn't usually horrible. You will free up near Roseville.

It is a lovely drive.

Be sure and carry chains, just in case. You just never know with the traffic and weather. If there's good skiing, the traffic will be stop and go.

CA DOT has a website that has current conditions on the California leg of I-80, from the Bay Bridge all the way to the Nevada border. You can check it to see up to date road conditions and chain restrictions.

Have you considered taking the train? Beautiful, relaxing. Leaves at 11:00 gets to Reno at 4:00.

Might not fit your schedule, but it really is almost a bucket list trip.

Thanks for the advice all, I've driven this way twice in summer but first time in fall-winter. It is very scenic and I can imagine the train is beautiful!
Will just have to cross fingers and hope for no snow. I have chains but never had to use them.
