I'm soon to receive my first payment from Calif. short-term state disability insurance. I'm now at home recovering from surgery. My HR contact told me that I'm required to periodically update my manager regarding my health status/progress. Is this a legal requirement? Considering privacy rights, how much am I required to divulge, if any?

You're required to divulge enough to establish that you are medically disqualified from performing your job. That's the "price" you pay for getting to stay home while your colleagues are working.

All you should have to provide them is a copy of the note from the doctor you'll have to provide the state that says you are still disabled/unable to work. It seems like a fair request to me. They need to know if you are still an employee or not. I don't think they need a detailed analysis, just a note that says, yep, he/she still needs to stay home and can't work until approximately x date.

If you want to find out the actual law, you could contact the CA Department of Fair Employment and Housing:
