I saw on another thread that waiting for buses can take half an hour. So do people walk a lot in SF? I prefer walking, but in SD, everyone drives and it is kind of embarrassing to walk to places unless you are in certain neighborhoods (downtown, Hillcrest, etc.). Since SF is more centralized, are there a lot of people out and about so that it is not embarrassing to walk? Thanks.

Walking is big in SF. Plus you dont feel like a leper. If anything, in SF, having a car is a huge hassle.

Agreed. SF ranks near the top, with NYC and Chicago, as one of America's most walkable cities. Having a car in the city limits actually impedes your movement. That right there should be the standard of mass-transit planners, to create systems that make car ownership a negative, in a given area where a system is implemented.

However, there are hills in San Francisco that can leave you wheezing by the time you get to the top . In some places, steps are used in place of regular sidewalks.

if it's within walking distance most people in SF just walk, if you go shopping downtown, it's easier to walk or park in a garage and walk from there.

"Embarrassing to walk"???? Obesity must be on the rise in SD!!!!! Why would you ever be embarrassed to walk somewhere? I don't get it ...

I've lived in all kinds of different parts of the Bay Area for 20 years, mostly suburban, and I've never been ridiculed just for walking or using public transit instead of driving.

My fiancee lives around Alamo Square and we often walk from her place to downtown (Union Square, Embarcadero, etc.) It's sometime almost as fast as Muni, especially during off-peak hours when you otherwise might have to wait 30 minutes for the next bus to arrive. One of the main reasons we walk is not needing to park - it's not the paying for parking that gets me (I know of a lot of parking ramps that offer fairly cheap rates during off-peak hours), but rather finding parking around her place at the end of the evening.

Well, when everyone around is driving, and you are the only one walking, it feels awkward. Especially if you are walking with one other person or by yourself.

If anything, people will ridicule you for driving... my friends who live downtown & in North Beach think I'm crazy for having a car! Unfortunately it's a necessity for me, because of where I live and work. But yes, people walk a lot in SF - even with our ridiculously steep hills.
