Good morning all, my husband may take a position in Almeda so I am beginning my online search into the area and having never even visited CA, it's tricky. I would want to look into areas with a reasonable commute, good schools (3 kids) nice outdoor areas (2 dogs) and a safe town that's not too soccer mom ish . My son suggested San Ramon. I would appreciate any advice on any other areas you would recommend. We may have to rent for a time to save up more deposit....your houses are bloody expensive!!!!

Haha, now there's the problem....at the moment I live in a four bed, 3,000 sq ft home with 3 1/2 acres in a great school district, it's worth about $450.000. Looking on zillow we could probably get a 3 bed, much smaller home with no land in San Ramon for about $650.000, so I'm thinking along those lines (renting for a short while first to save up the additional deposit we would need).

San Ramon is about as soccer mom-ish as you can get. Well, maybe Danville is worse, but that's right next door to it. Also, the commute from San Ramon to Alameda is a real bear, so you probably aren't interested.

Alameda itself is perfect for what you're looking for. Alameda is a highly desirable, family-friendly-but-not-just-family-focused, safe, established community with one of the largest concentrations of Victorian homes in the country. Schools and parks are good, as are the bars and restaurants.

Luckily housing in Alameda shouldn't be unobtainable for you. You should be able to find something that fits your entire family for around $600K. Just keep in mind that just like the rest of the Bay Area, there's no way you're going to get 3.5 acres of land (or even half an acre). Here's a good sample listing for a home for sale in Alameda: 927 Taylor Ave, Alameda, CA 94501 - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - realtor.com® (picked randomly, I have no stake in the property sale)
