Had a run in with them on Thursday night. They seem more thuggish than the people who they are supposed to protect us from. I get the vibe of a twenty-something who seems to be making up for the days he got bullied when he was younger. Anyone else experience something similar?

Not in SF, but your comments reflect an encounter I had with the LAPD, when I lived down south. Complete jerk with a power trip and authority trip. Would not listen at all about my side of the story. (It was a perceived traffic violation.)

Keep in mind that cops deal with the negative element in life all day and become rather "hardened" and insensitive when dealing with the civilian population. Not making excuses for them, just the fact.

On the other hand, I have had some very positive experiences with officers in Southern California and here in the Bay Area when calling for service and being stopped in my car for traffic violations (got off with only a warning).

I got a ticket for an open container of alcohol and the two cops were just being very sarcastic about the whole thing. They were telling me they could take me to jail and stuff. I don't think thats possible for an open container but I don't know the law good enough to make that judgement. They pretended that they might not give me a ticket but since they didn't like my attitude they gave me one. mod cutThey already started writing my friend a ticket so I know they were just being douches. I asked him why he doesn't do something more important like go down to Turk and Taylor and fight some real crime and he went off on me telling me I not to tell him how to do his job. He went on a rant yelling at us. I mean I was seriously curious as to why he got me for an open container in front of Jack in the Box on Geary when he can walk a couple blocks down in the Tenderloin and actually do something meaningful. Then he went on a tangent about me getting pistol whipped somewhere on Turk and if that happens not to call them. It was hard to follow his train of thought he wasn't the most intricate speaker. I just kind of ignored everything he said at that point.

Later that night I my friend and I were walking on larkin by the New Century when we saw about 10 cops walk in. One of them walked in with a shotgun so we were obviously curious to what was happening. We stood outside the door with this big group and all of a sudden the same cop come out and starts cursing at me and tells me to get the **** out of there. Not anyone else, just my friend and I. He threatened to take us to jail again. So we walked away and I got a hold of the non emergency number and the number to file a complaint but I needed his badge number. I decided against walking back down to get his badge number.

We weren't drunk or belligerent on either occasion. mod cut I really think the guys we ran into were on a huge power trip because they can order everyone around without a reaction. They were very disrespectful and sarcastic. Like seriously, why? And I still don't know why they don't arrest drug dealers and prostitutes but give tickets for parking and open containers. Less paperwork maybe?

Ahhh...there's your problem. Don't ever tell a cop from any city/town that he SHOULD be doing something "more important". Cops don't like smart ass#$$.

To be honest, I've only had pretty good experiences with the SFPD. Once, (now this was looong ago) but me and a friend were really drunk and my friend decided to scream for her boyfriend in the middle of the night on Haight St. She kept screaming her head off until someone called the cops. Cops, in all honesty gave her fair chance to calm down. They put her in the back of the cop car to do so. She refused and started kicking the doors and windows of the car--really going nuts, you know? Meanwhile, I'm trying to calm her...give her hand signals to quit. Of course she refuses and then they haul her off. They seemed quite willing to work with her.

Quite drunk myself, they ask me if I am okay to drive home and they let me off...even though I had been drinking as much as my friend. Tried to get her out of jail (with the boyfriend/ex-boyfriend) the next day to no avail.

There wasn't any real reason for him to be "nice" to you. It's not his job. I have a friend (a woman, actually) that is a SFPD. They really are not into dealing with your mouthing off/bullsh++ attitude...they deal with it CONSTANTLY. Power trip or not, you do what they say, be respectful (even if you don't think they deserve it!) and for the most part, they'll leave you alone. When you're young, it's easy to get carried away and act like some cop is giving you trouble. Getting all mad because they weren't "respectful" to you. When you're more mature, you learn to play the game to keep yourself out of trouble (for the most part---there are exceptions, of course). Let it go. You were in a very icky part of town, and they are sick of dealing with the cra* day to day. Your PRIDE can get you into some real problems if you obsess about not being treated fairly---whaaahhhh -little punk! (is what they think)!

^^^^^^^^

He told me to gtfo and leave. But not everyone else. This leads me to believe he was just ****ing with me. Logical assumption, no?

I don't care that I was going to get a ticket, but the dude was just toying with me. If you're going to give me a ticket give me a ticket, be real about it. The two cops couldn't have been older than 23.

Kinda pointless and a waste of time pondering it and holding onto anger when you'd been obviously drinking in public, no?

I was drinking. I wasn't mad about getting caught drinking in public. I was mad about the interaction with these cops. And for the record I was not drunk, wouldn't even say I was buzzed.
