Hi, I recently moved to Los Angeles from New York to be closer to family. I've been having great difficulty finding a job here. I'm looking for basic administrative / office work, though I have applied for work in food service as barista or what not. I've only gotten a response from one restaurant with part-time work. It's really been a shock because I have never had trouble finding work, and I had a friend look over my resume and who did not see any issues with it.

Seeing as I like LA but, don't love it I don't want to have to struggle here trying to find work. I have a friend who lives in Fremont, CA that I could stay with, and I'm thinking of going up there. I have never been to San Francisco so I really do not know anything about it. I'm going up there next weekend to check it out.

I've read the unemployment rate there is 5.9% compared to LAs 12%. I was thinking of trying to get work in the city of San Francisco and commuting there from Fremont, maybe eventually living someplace within the city. So my questions are, what part of the city is the easiest to get to when commuting from a place like Fremont? How is the employment situation there?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Bay Area Rapid Transit

BART runs to the city from Fremont. I'm looking for admin work myself and getting nowhere. But your situation might be entirely different. I've been out of work since August.

Fremont to SF is reachable via BART, but BART only serves certain parts of the city (Financial District, Embarcadero, The Mission, Glen Park, etc). SF is much more compact than Los Angeles, so you could take BART into one of the stations in SF and then take a Muni bus, or walk to your destination.

LA is a tough place to find work, for sure.

The employment market is good in the Bay Area, for IT professionals and those supporting them. There are likely other good opportunities also.

Driving from Fremont to SF, on a daily basis, would be a terrible commute, due to the congestion at the Bay Bridge toll plaza, 880 freeway (our version of LA's 405) and within SF itself.

I suggest that you also consider the $5.65 fare each way on the BART, and that the trip takes about fifty minutes.

Which is actually pretty quick by Bay Area standards.
Where exactly in Fremont your friend is? Fremont is big, and it may take up to 30 min extra to get to the BART station.

Look for a job in Fremont or SJ too. I don't know why you would forcus on SF for admin work, it's really all over so keep your commute to a minimum. I won't take any job like that more than 5 miles from my house.

Have you looked into the job listings at UC Berkeley? A university job can be a good gig, good benefits and great vacation schedule. Admin jobs are everywhere. Consider going through a job placement agency. You can afford their fee if you'll be staying with friends for free or low rent.

Recruiters definitely have fees. Paid by the hiring company.
