i would assume there are buses-it might take more then one. go to 511.org and use the trip planner to get specifics.

Dumbarton Express is probably your best bet, it goes from Union City to Palo Alto. The rest of the way can be covered either by local buses or Caltrain (see previous suggestions).

Depends where in Fremont you're talking about, but your choices are limited to the DB express or the U. Then take Caltrain or Samtrans as others have mentioned. Google transit actually says taking Capitol Corridor or ACE to SJ then Caltrain could be faster, probably due to all the transfers on the bus, though probably pretty expensive.
