Hello all - this forum has been very helpful - thanks in advance for any advice - here is our situation

My wife and I are both physicians looking to move to S.F. Bay area - My job in Marin County (Larkspur), her job in Burlingame. We plan to start our commute around 7AM to start the workday (arrive at work) at 7:30 AM for me and around 8:00 for my wife. Workday ends around 6PM.

My plan would be to either live in Sausalito or the Marina District in S.F. - Using website like 511.org, the estimated commute times for leaving at 7AM is about 15 mnutes for me and about 30-40 min for my wife.

My questions - is this realistic? In the morning, when does rush hour get busy and in what direction across GG ? Is my wife's commute somewhat of a "reverse commute" (going south of the city in the AM and back into the city in the evening).

Thanks again for your advice -

I'd say it is better to stay on the south side of the Golden Gate, but the prospect of living in Sausalito would be awfully tempting to me. As far as commuting, if you were in SF, your wife would face some delays on the city streets getting to the freeway part of 101, but you should be fine doing your commute into Marin County. If you were on the north side of the bridge it would be even easier for you but very trying for your wife.

As far as what times, it's hard to "beat the traffic" but it's usually lighter at 7 am than it is at 8 am.

Default Thanks

thanks - I was trying to get an idea of what it is like crossing the GG bridge from Sausalito into the city at around 7:00 AM - I think the route my wife would take would be around the city on 1/19th Ave to I-280. From my limited experience, I-280 is more pleasant of a drive and heading south in the morning away from SF should be somewhat lighter than 101 or any northbound traffic heading into the city - do you agree?

I do agree that 280 beats 101 any day of the week, but the stretch of Highway 1 that goes through San Francisco is a pain (stoplights all the way down), and the lanes are awfully narrow. It keeps you on your toes, and it can jam up worse than the bridge when it's bad.
