Hi everyone!

My husband might be getting a job interview in Santa Rosa. We are from Binghamton NY. We have 2 boys ages 6 and 2. We are looking for a safe neighborhood with good schools. We will probably be renting for a couple years, $2,500 the most. A place with low crime rate is a plus. What areas should we avoid. The farthest he can commute to work 30-40 min. I hope this helps, any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

stay away from the roseland area & you'll be fine. what company is the job with? that will help narrow down the field, no sense in living on the north side of town if the job is on the south side or vice versa.

south side of town has older sections, as well as new, so you're going to get a mixture of larger lots & postage stamp size lots. anything from ranch style homes to 2 stories, some neighbors will have horses or goats (depending on their lot size). roseland is in the south side, but there are plenty of other areas that will work for you. i think the $2500 will be more than enough for renting a place. i would include rohnert park in your search area. the line seperating rp & sr is pretty blurred, so you wouldn't even know where one stops & the other begins. rp has more tract homes compared to south sr. shopping in rp is easier, less crowded to get around. also, sales tax varies city to city, even tho it's all in the same county.

www.pressdemo.com is the local newspaper

be prepared! the sidewalks pretty much roll up come about 8pm. one of the many reasons i left...i enjoy the 24 hr lifestyle.

schools have changed drastically since i lived there, so i couldn't answer which schools would be better for the kids.

I moved from the LA area with my GF to Santa Rosa about 12 months ago and we really like it. The town is generally safe expect for the roseland area. We don't have kids yet but I did buy a condo in an area near good schools. Some of the schools have low ratings so you need to do your homework. Most of the better schools are on the east side of town.

As a side my GF has meet a lot of people that have moved from NY to SR area.
