Start at the Better Business Bureau. http://goldengate.bbb.org/ Beware of a moving company that is less than, say, 5 years old -- it might be that they closed shop on Friday & reopened on Monday under a new name. If it were me, I would only do business with someone part of a national organization such as Bekins or United Van Lines. Note that when you move, you are not doing business with either Bekins or United or whomever - you are doing business with a local business that is an agent for the national moving company. If there is a severe issue in your move, you can complain to the national organization that has some leverage with the local moving company. It has much more leverage in interstate moves (e.g., CA to NV) than in intrastate moves (CA to CA), but it will have a little.

Make sure you read the reviews of the company.

Note that if you pack your own goods, and they are damaged in transit, it will ALWAYS be considered your fault for not doing a good enough job. The insurance isn't worth much of anything - it is based on weight (e.g., so many cents per pound). About the only thing the insurance is good for is if the moving truck catches on fire & is completely destroyed.

These guys moved my daughter from Salinas to Oakland. Not sure if they would move someone on the peninsula, but they were fantastic. Book online to save 10% too.
