My daughter wants to go to zoo. We are 10 minutes from SF Zoo, so that's the one we usually go to. I went to the Oakland Zoo many years ago, before an announced remodeling project, and before kids. I recall the sky ride, which was a surprise.

Who's been to both and how are they the same, and how are they different? Which do you prefer?

Oakland Zoo is my choice every time. The exhibits are better designed both for the animals and the viewers, and the overall experience is nicer without the Sunset weather pattern.

The Oakland Zoo! I love the Oakland Zoo! Very modern, and most of their animals are rescues. The Oakland Zoo trumps the SF Zoo in just about every respect except for maybe the lemur exhibit (although the lemurs are still awesome at Oakland, especially at feeding time!). The SF Zoo has a lot of outdated exhibits and can be a little depressing. They badly need a facelift. I went once and that was enough for me. Oakland's a much better experience.

We have been to the SF zoo about 6 years ago and have been to the Oakland zoo a couple of times in the last 5 years. We live in Livermore so Oakland is a lot closer so it makes for an easier day trip. SF zoo wins because they have the gorilla exhibit and you can watch them feed the big cats which is really cool oh and the penguin tank was really cool. But Oakland zoo is nice too so it's worth checking out.

Ok, we'll head over to the Oakland Zoo to check it out. We don't mind putting a few extra miles on the car that has well over 100K already. We were in east bay last weekend too - hiked Sunol Wilderness, and kids loved "Little Yosemite" water falls so much, they asked if they could go every weekend!

Will report back how the zoos compare, especially from a kid's point of view.

Oakland Zoo -- it's also more kid sized. By the time we got all around the SF Zoo I was exhausted. And that sky ride is a blast, we do it around the middle, and it's nice and relaxing, breaks up the trip.

Sf zoo is almost a real city zoo. Oakland zoo is a town zoo.

They're the same size - about 100 acres - but the Oakland Zoo has annual attendance more than sixfold higher. It's also part of the 600+ acre Knowland Park.

In almost every conceivable way the Oakland Zoo is the superior zoo. Unless you want to see depressed animals socked in by fog, I don't know why anyone would ever want to visit the SF Zoo. The Oakland Zoo isn't the San Diego Zoo or anything crazy, but it's actually pretty nice.
