I am a soon to be college grad with a job offer in SF, its easy to look at stats and figures all day long but I haven't heard anything about the culture here. I want a work hard play hard atmosphere with a lot of young professionals but am curious about a number of things. Is the fact that there are a lot of quants downtown b/c of Google fb and such, create an isolated atmosphere? Also, I am very politically active but have a more libertarian mindset(fiscal conservative, social liberal) I feel as though I will have to deal with a lot of protests I have no interests in. Will I be annoyed by the protests and demonstrations or are they quite minor in actuality?

Why would you be annoyed by protests? You are welcome to participate or not participate---isn't that what freedom of speech is supposed to be all about?

Nobody's gonna assault you for what you may/may not be thinking.

Lots of young professionals. Many bankers and "tech"-ies in Soma and Mission, "frat"-ies in North Beach, families the farther you get from downtown. Theres lots of areas that are different but yes sometimes they can feel a little exclusive.

Protests? They happen. Annoy me? No. But they may annoy you. For example a few months ago I was driving in the City and was stopped by a monthly anti-car bikeride which parked me for 10 minutes while it passed.

SF does have lots of cultural and social events, many of which are just young people having a good time.

I am also a fiscal conservative, social liberal. The techies haven't taken over completely. Still plenty in: FP&A (forecasting), accounting, risk management, financial district type industries.

Beware, lots of people staring at smartphones all day long.

Many young professionals in SOMA, Union Square, Marina, Financial District and Nob Hill. Very vibrant area, but expensive and great culture (which is worth the high prices, IMO). There is resentment about the "techies" as they have driven up (rapidly) the housing costs (rentals and properties for sale) here in the city and a growing resentment about income inequality.

Just be cool and all will be fine. From living here now for more than 18 years it becomes apparent that the some newcomers more prone to frequent bouts of pretense are the first ones to go. I have seen it over and over. Possibly mental exhaustion from trying too hard. In fact a neighbor of mine, himself a hip and bohemian resident of North Beach for over 23years stands by this theory and I tend to agree. San Francisco has changed a whole lot in the past decade or so. I am so glad to have experienced the city prior to the mass influx of techies to the city. I swear if they try and gentrify the Mission and put condo complexes there , I along with some of the "natives" here will riot in the streets. In fact what I have noticed in the past few years is a palpable tension between the well heeled tech yuppies and some of the average joe's in the city. One night in North Beach I saw for myself how two clean cut young techies, acting loud in a bar, got invites to step outside by a couple of local MMA coaches from a dojo in the Mission (I know one of the guys) and got their asses whupped in fine fashion. Incidents like this happen more than ever now . That is just one example of many I have heard about. I am sure you get the jist.
btw I work in tech myself but have lived here long enough to understand what works for a pleasant experience in the long run. Do your thing , don't try too hard , learn to laugh (it does help here) and find your own self in this wonderful town. Just don't incur the wrath of old techies that happen to brown belt in BJJ..... lol........

I just think protests are ineffective. Its good to hear that people like to laugh though. I just don't want to live in a city where I'm texting my friend sitting next to me or always have people playing on their tech. What do you think makes SF the best for a recent college grad, and what do you think makes it the worst. I will be working in management consulting and have other offers in LA, DC, and Dallas
