I suppose this all depends upon your age and lifestyle. When I was young and college aged, I felt like everyone was self absorbed and on prozac and had so many things going on with own lives. Most everyone was either a "commuter" or was from somewhere out of state and was trying to figure out who they were. It was hard to make true friends. But when I got older and settled down and had kids, I met so many wonderful "settled" family types that actually realized that SF was their home and not just a place to "discover" themselves, only to move on.

You can never tell a San Fransiscan whats wrong with San Fransisco. It's like talking to an avacado, you're not going to get the response you had hoped for.

Again, a generalization. My friends and I have discussions about San Francisco short-comings all the time. Just because we love San Francisco, and boy does she deserve such love, doesn't mean we don't recognize her flaws.

It sounds like the response you're hoping for is they'll agree with you when you bash their city. People who like where they live aren't going to do that, it doesn't matter where they live. Sometimes I read some boards of places I've lived in the past that I hated, and see that other people love those places - to each his own. I don't see any point in trying to convince someone that their feelings about a place are wrong. They're just different. Luckily for us, we live in a country where just about anyone should be able to find a place to live that suits them, no matter who they are and what their preferences are.

Most people who live in SF know all too well its faults - it would be hard to miss them - but love it, anyway. Just like in a happy marriage where your partner has a few irritating habits, but everything else about them is so wonderful it more than makes up for them. If those irritations override the good aspects, than the place, wherever it is, is not for you.

Then why argue with us?? But seriously, I wouldn't LIVE here if I thought it was an awful place, since that would be rather stupid. Second of all, I do acknowledge the real flaws of SF, as do most other San Franciscans I meet... I'm the first to complain about real estate & rental costs, traffic, flaky people, and the homeless problem. But in my opinion the positives outweigh the negatives, or I wouldn't have chosen to live here. I moved away for 8 years after high school, and came back 5 years ago to attend grad school - thought I'd leave after that, but somehow got sucked back into the SF culture. Now I can't imagine leaving again, at least not for quite a while. To each his own, and I don't understand why you'd be determined to convince people they hate their town!

Exactly. Why would ANYONE in their right mind pay what we pay to live here if it was horrible? We pay a premium to live here because we love it. The things that bug me the most - homeless and clueless people on public transport.
