I may be considering an internship opportunity in SoMA in SF--specifically Howard street. I currently live in West San Jose (near Westgate mall). Google maps has me taking several buses and BART, but I'd rather figure out a way to avoid having to catch multiple buses. if there is some way I can take a light rail straight to BART then that would be great.

I live near a VTA light rail station in Campbell, and I know that the Diridon Station stop on the Mountain View rail leads to Caltrain which goes to SF.

Can anyone making a similar commute make any suggestions? Thanks.

Since BART hasn't reached the South Bay yet, your best bet is going via CalTrain, although it's a pain. Just like typical Silicon Valley commuters, you need to take Caltrain to San Francisco. BART would be better, but it's simply not built yet.

Take the VTA 26 bus to within walking distance of Sunnyvale Caltrain but it is still a long slow ride.

Is there a reason why you recommend the Sunnyvale station over Diridon? I live closer to Diridon and would rather avoid taking a bus.

Its just an alternate suggestion. I am not aware of a direct bus connection from the Westgate Mall area to a Diridon Caltrain station. I think the VTA train to Mountain View would be very slow and out of the way.

  • Take bus 82 from Westgate to Hamilton Light Rail Station
  • Take Hamilton Light Rail to Diridon (the train will say "mountain view" on it)
  • Take Caltrain to San Francisco 4th and King.
Done

Google says to take 82 all the way to Diridon but I suggest stopping at Hamilton Light Rail Station and take the light rail from there to Diridon. 82 get stuck in really bad traffic sometimes (often).

edit: when you follow this link, click on the "82 902 Limited" option, second from the top. I tried to do a direct link for just that transit option but it didn't work.

Bus 82 goes from Westgate to San Jose Diridon Train Station.

Light rail is actually a lot faster than bus 82, but you take 82 to get to Hamilton Light Rail and then take light rail from there to diridon. After Hamilton Light Rail is when 82 gets stuck in traffic.

Try Transit.511.org for routes. It has more "complete" info than google maps typically does.

82 also stops at the Tamien Caltrain station.
