Is a salary of $62,000 doable to live on the east bay for a family of four with one working parent?

Okay so with that in mind, can we live comfortably off of this salary? We have two kids and need at least a 2 or 3 bdrm apt/condo (not in the city) and don't want to spend more than $2100 a month in rent.

The East Bay is a huge geographical area. Without knowing where your job is, and how long you are willing to commute, it's pretty difficult to answer your question. In general though, figure at least $1,800/mo. for rent and if you are commuting, use $3.50/gal calculate your gas costs.

If your limit is 2000 bucks you can get a 2 or 3 bedroom deal in the east bay easily. The city is over priced and for that much you'll end up in a phone booth with a neighborhood laundry joint .

I was leaning more toward the Walnut Creek/Concord area. How is San Mateo and Dublin? Is Tracy too far?

My husband is actually the bread-winner and he will be working as a Sales Manager for Philip Morris USA. Since his territory will cover SF and Oakland, he would never have to report to a office (he would have a home office), just working out of those cities.

Oh than by all means, check out the east bay. tracy is a bit further out there but if hes working from home you might want to check it out. you can rent a house for that much out that way.
