I actually saw a place in El Granada yesterday. Nixed it only because it was an in-law unit below someone who has their TV on 24/7 and wouldn't be willing to change their ways.. otherwise it would've been fine. Going to see a place in the Oakland hills tonight.

That place was AMAZING. I wouldn't mind enduring an hour-long commute on the Bay Bridge to come home to that. Hope I get it!

It's an in-law unit in Montclair in a gorgeous house with a great family. I would feel extremely fortunate to live there with them.

Damn. They relisted it without calling me back.

If I had to move back into my South San Francisco apartment, I would. I would not have left if it wasn't for the fire.

Anyway, any other ideas? Following one poster's advice, I'm looking into studios in more upscale complexes in the area. I found one by the Broadway Caltrain station for $1340 (without utilities!), one facing I-280 at 2000 Crystal Springs in San Bruno for $1200, one in Alameda on Central Ave., for $1270, and one in Belmont at 200 Davey Glen for $1225. But these are all megacomplexes with hundreds if not thousands of units, and the high prices wouldn't necessarily keep one from having the same kinds of problems that are driving me out of Redwood City.

After seeing a whole bunch of places I settled on an apartment in Belmont. I stood outside that place at 6 pm and you could hear a pin drop. I'm not expecting it to be perfect, but it should be quite a step up from this war zone.

Well, that was interesting. I put a deposit down on that Belmont place I mentioned above. Then I got a call back from my old landlady in South San Francisco saying the complex was open (they had a fire which displaced me) and I could move back in.. so I did!

...But because I put a $400 deposit down on that Belmont place, I'm out $400. I signed an agreement saying that it doubled as a holding fee, and I only had 48 hours after I put it down to get it back. Fortunately being in this SSF place, I'll save that much in rent and transport costs in a matter of about two months..
