Professorjpj:

Well, if you prefer the ocean, come up further north to Seattle. Just like Portland, they welcome the 'homeless' here. The only difference between here and Portland is that Seattle bums are typically extremely aggressive and violent; but that seems to have the local populace (including the police) cowed into giving them everything they want.

Another consideration with Seattle is that we have way more bums than either Portland or San Francisco; 3rd only to NYC and LA, according to DHS figures. And they're not concentrated Downtown, but spread out all over the city.

There are plenty of non-homeless people who evade fares in SF. It's pretty endemic.. but they have started cracking down on the light-rail in particular.

Thanks for reminding me: another advantage to being a bum in Seattle is that you don't have to pay for bus fare. Everyone else does---in fact they're raising fares for paying customers---but just cuss out the driver and he'll let on you ride free of charge. If you reek of marijuana or alcohol; so much the better.

Yes, it's the same here in SF. If you make enough of an ass of yourself Muni bus and train drivers will just leave you alone.

In some places its actually a criminal charge to be homeless and/or destitute.. I guess that makes every poor unfortunate homeless person a possible "criminal" in the wrong places right? Wait until they start CHARGING for clean air/water, which will be the end result of all this greedy capitalism... Talk about a LOT of criminals right? HA

My heart bleeds for you, non-paying public transit user.

You are now attempting to divert the conversation, because there is a hole in your "logic" that you can't fill. Your statement does not change the fact that you steal and don't understand that it is wrong to do so. That's what makes you a lowlife, not your homelessness.

By the way, "they" do charge for water. It's a municipal utility. It is also provided free of charge in fountains and bottle-filling stations all around San Francisco, courtesy of the customers who pay their water bills. You are not getting over on anyone by taking it from public fountains, nor is it dishonest to do so. You're welcome.

If you take it from a private residence or business without permission, you are stealing and possibly also trespassing.

Professorjpj1:

No---it's not illegal to be homeless anywhere in the United States and certainly not illegal to be destitute. The problem is that the 'homeless' ---as others have mentioned---violate the laws in other ways and then claim they're a persecuted victim class.
