When I first visited SF in 1969 they were all over the city including one in the hotel where I was staying- "Sam's Original Hofbrau" in the Hotel Oxford, now known as the Metropolis Hotel. A Google search shows only 2 hofbraus in the entire Bay Area.

Are San Franciscans' taste buds so jaded that they stopped patronizing this unique but plebeian institution of gastronomy found nowhere else in the USA?

Thanks, Mr. Bolo. Lefty O'Douls does not identify itself as a hofbrau (even though it is) and Tommy's Joynt mentions the word once (as Hof-Brau) on its website. Google's web crawler didn't pick up the designation.

So, next time that I visit the fair city of SF, I know that I can still eat good and cheap.

Harry's Hofbrau in the south bay. They have 3 restaurants, down from 5 or 6 a couple of years ago. I love their corn beef on rye

Not limited to the South Bay. Also on the Peninsula in a couple or three locations.

There used to be one in Oakland that my grandmother would take me to. Don't remember the name. As I recall, it was near the Doggie Diner?

Was it on the corner of Broadway & Grand? That spot got remodeled 10-12 years ago and is now Luka's Taproom.
Brennan's in Berkeley is still going strong.

That sounds right. I can just visualize it, but I left the area right out of high school, so never really got a "map" idea of where we were. But, I have a memory of the Doggie Diner being on a funny corner that was kind of in the middle of an intersection. And the hofbrau being across the street, maybe kitty corner. But, this is a kid's memory, so not sure of specifics.

Huh, I googled for a photo of the old doggie diner in Oakland and found this photo. Memory did serve me, but I'm not sure where this intersection is? Anybody know? I think the hofbrau was across the street.
