Good for you, OP, to find your groove in super simplicity. I live on a sailboat. A small one. Been here in the Bay since '66. There are thousands of us nuts, unbeknownst mostly to the kind of small-minded, judgmentalists like the first person who responded to your post here.

In fact, many of us minimalists live the lifestyles we do even when we can afford the traditional. It is a breeze, when you live simplistically, to stay clean and sanitary and neat and productive and sane, and contribute to your community. Far more so than when trapped by the myriad complicated trappings we are conditioned to believe as necessary.

I have a very close friend who owns multiple rental properties worth scobs of money. He has both pension income and property income - yet he splits his time between living in his van and on several boats he keeps in three different states including Hawaii and California. He does it for the same reason you describe.

Welcome to sanity

Thank you Tulemutt for your kind words. You articulate my thoughts into words. Unbeknownst to many, the things in our ownership, are actually in ownership of us.

If there's one thing I've learned from this forum it's this.

I pray that I don't get car jacked. But if I do, good luck to the sorry bastard who inherits my limping half broken down old VW bus. I could keep up with him on my bicycle.

OP, when my daughter went to go to college in Santa Barbara (community college) a good friend of hers moved to town in his pickup with a camper shell on it. He got a 24 Hour Fitness membership and used it for showering, etc. and he did actually work out there, too lol!

He did this for most of the first year he was there, going to school full-time and working as a waiter part-time.

Get an address at a mailbox place, get a gym membership, and just move the van around until you figure out the friendly areas. This can definitely be done, and you will be able to save a sh*tload of money, which you'll be able to turn into a nice fat juicy down payment one day soon. Or heck, you can buy a boat with it and join the Mutt on the water.

Nice! That's what I've been doing down here in San Luis Obispo. And oh you know I've been saving up for that down payment

I've got my eyes on a Victorian fixer upper in West Oakland, or a condo in Adam's Point, or maybe a boat in the bay .

I don't know what all these snark comments are about, but it sounds like fun for a little while. Why do so many people have a problem with the way OP chooses to live his life? From what he wrote, it sounds like he is not disturbing anyone, so what is the problem? Typical Californians.
