There are some good charts in here, and a handy little average rent by neighborhood chart.

The San Francisco Rent Explosion: Part II

Unless you want to live in the hood or in an area disconnected from transit, I hope you have over $3000 to spend for your 1 bedroom!

Do those median numbers include all apartments or just those listed currently? You'll be scraping fairly close to the bottom of the barrel if you're looking at apartments at those prices right now (I know this from experience over the last 3 weeks). The numbers actually seem low to me. Good luck getting a place with parking at most of those prices.

$3000 for one bedroom seems low. I thought it would be more.... Also the rent seems very low for sunset/richmond.

Agreed. $2100 in the Inner Sunset or $2200 in the Inner Richmod would likely be a dump.

It is. I've seen what the rental stock is like over there. Years ago, I saw an apartment in the Inner Sunset that had cobwebs in every corner, dirty, shoddy, but back then it was $1100 so people were swarming the place. They had so many people already there before me that I just left, I had no chance. And that's if what you're looking at is actually an apartment.. most of the 1-bed rentals will be dungeon in-laws that are built into a cold, dreary garage.

Yeah, the 1 bedroom price for West Portal and Glen Park are so low and then the 3 bedroom price is so high. I'm guessing it's because there are no 1 bedrooms in those areas. Or they are just rooms to rent if they do have them.

Rooms for rent are awesome.

$1000/month can be paid by someone who makes 3000 per month (about 20/hour) so that's not so bad. Many apartments in sf and sj are shared also. For example, one person in the bedroom, one has a partitioned space in the living room. Or two people in the bedroom and two people in the living room.

I lived in SF area for a few years and love it. I now live in the deep south and hate it. Due to my job I will never be able to afford to live in SF again - what places are highly similar yet cheaper? And btw, F silicon valley people
