Hi all,
I will soon be working in the Telegraph Hill area, but rents there are just too high for my current salary. Where, in your opinon, is a good, safe place to live with an easy commute into the city? I don't think I will have a car and will rely mostly on public transportation. I was considering Berekley, as I'm pretty familiar with it, but I'm a little concerned about a daily commute from there.

Thanks in advance!

The commute from Berkeley should be fairly easy, since you can take BART most/all of the way (depending on your exact locations)... Oakland would be even easier, and has safe areas like Lake Merritt and the hills, among others. Alameda is also a nice town that's close to SF, but you'd probably have to take a ferry over. The north Peninsula would be another good option, especially if you live near a BART station - SSF, San Bruno, Daly City, Millbrae, etc. The first three have a few sketchy areas, and the general rule-of-thumb is to stay west of El Camino Real (with a few exceptions in Daly City).

Study this map, since it will be your best bet for commuting into SF: http://bart.gov/stations/map/systemMap.asp
If you don't want a long commute, try not to go north of Berkeley or south of San Leandro - and probably avoid the EAST bay, like Walnut Creek & beyond.

Live in Alameda (great town) and take the ferry (best commute option out there).
